Managing Editor AW&ST
It appears that AW&ST has decided to abandon the major air carriers -- that’s right, the ones that pioneered this industry over the last 75 years -- in favor of the “new entrants” like AirTran, formerly known as Value Jet. The June 21st issue devotes the entire editorial page to AirTran’s Joe Leonard, who spews biased views, blasts the majors, and tells everyone -- five paragraphs in a row -- how brilliant & wonderful AirTran is. In the Air Transport section, James Ott puts another favorable spin on AirTran, concluding his article by telling us that “Major airlines are losers.”
AirTran and the other new airlines wouldn’t even exist if the major carriers hadn’t paved the way for the industry. For a publication like AW&ST to overlook this context is to forsake decades of aviation history.
Clearly, AW&ST has chosen its side. I’m just glad you weren’t my wingman.
Sincerely,
Capt. Robert L. Burns (Ret.) Fairfield, CT
