Mary Cole Ormesher
HAMPTON - Mary Cole Ormesher, 73, died peacefully on Dec. 15, 2005, at
Newton Memorial Hospital in Newton.
Born in Chicago, Ill., on Dec. 6, 1932, Mrs. Ormesher moved to Hampton
with her husband and children in 1966. She graduated from Stetson
University and did graduate studies at the University of Vienna,
Austria. She taught school briefly before marrying David Ormesher and
switching to raising five children and taking responsibility for
several more. She and her family traveled extensively to various parts
of the world, introducing her children to the value of cross-cultural
experiences. Her passion for Christian missionary work contributed to
much of this travel.
Mrs. Ormesher was a member of the Lafayette Federated Church for
nearly 40 years and devoted much time and effort to encouraging the
mission program. She initiated the visitation program by missionaries
to the Vacation Bible School to enable the children to have a vision
for mission outreach. Her passion for encouraging missionaries
resulted in visits to missionaries in Japan, India, Eastern Siberia,
England, Korea, the Philippine Islands, Canada and Spain.
Mrs. Ormesher spent a great deal of time working with blind children,
teaching and caring extensively. She also had a strong interest in
gardening and food preservation, which she passed on to her children.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, David Sr.; five children,
David Jr., and his wife, Susan, of Chicago, John and his wife, Kristi,
of Melbourne, Fla., Mary Ellenberger and her husband, Michael, of
Longmont, Colo., Martha Howard and her husband, Timothy, of Auburn,
Maine, and Soon Kyu Shin and his wife, Grace, of Summit. Mrs. Ormesher
was blessed with nine beautiful grandchildren. She is also survived by
her two brothers, Hugh and John, and two sisters, Shirley and Frances.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 2 p.m. at
the Lafayette Federated Church in Lafayette.
