Family and Friends..in SFO..opening morning E mail found the following...it had been rumored for sometime United has wanted to close the JFK Domicile...with the loose of 777 flying in NY and that the need for 777 crews in NY has always been said to be the only reason United has keep a JFK Domicile, it is possible it may close the Domicile at some time down the road...We live in interesting times and the way the flying is now, working 20 long days per month, commuting is very hard to do for people anymore..so decisions might have to be made down the road...more to follow as you will read below this fall!!!

This morning the Company has announced that they are cancelling the JFK-LHR service effective October 29, 2006. The Company also announced that they will discontinue the JFK-NRT service and begin service from IAD-NRT effective October 31, 2006. These decisions will force the closing of the JFK 777 base.

As you are, your Council officers are as absolutely dismayed and astounded about these decisions. We find it unfathomable that this airline can not make a significant profit on these highly lucrative routes. Their decision to abandon these markets is final and irreversible.

Furthermore, the Company has notified the SSC of a NPDM which will address the feasibility of the entire JFK domicile in light of the closure of the JFK 777. LOA 97-04 mandates that the Company solicit input from the SSC and allow them to make recommendations on the allocation of flying. Formal discussions on the NPDM are scheduled to commence next week. There is no predetermined outcome with regard to this NPDM. A final ruling based on the data evaluated is scheduled to be rendered by the end of August.  The actual NPDM is attached for your reference.

At present, we are aware only of the facts as presented. The 777 decisions were completed exclusively behind the Company’s confidentially curtain with no input or comment from the ALPA. Your Council Officer’s just became aware of this decision late yesterday afternoon.

The Company has advised us that on Friday, July 28, System Chief Pilot Pat Durgin, will be in JFK operations to address questions. We have also been advised that other Company representatives will be at LGA and EWR. Questions about their exact time of availability should be addressed to the Flight Office. We have also recommended that these representatives be in our airport operations next week to further address issues as they develop.

Your officers along with the SSC are now fully engaged in the NPDM process. All possible options will be thoroughly reviewed and our position will be strongly defended and advocated.

Lastly, this Council has been through a lot of difficult times in the last five years. Our tenacity, character, and professionalism have been truly remarkable. Needless to say, these decisions will add further stress into our already stressful lives. As information develops we will disseminate it as quickly as possible. Rumors will undoubtedly develop very rapidly. However, it is imperative that you stay informed with the facts and most importantly do not allow these issues to degrade the safety and professionalism of our cockpits.

As always, your officers are available anytime for any questions or concerns you may have. Please don’t rely on rumors—contact us for the facts!
