On Saturday, October 15, 2005, at approximately 2 AM, Ed Payne died
from complications related to stomach cancer.  He died at home after
receiving hospice care since Thursday, October 6, 2005.  Ed celebrated
his 66th birthday on October 8, 2005.  He had been ill since February
2005 after the original diagnosis and total gastrectomy surgery.  He
had received chemotherapy after that but had more and more
difficulties with the chemo medications.  He required several
hospitalizations from February to the present.  Finally, his treating
physicians decided there was little they could do and recommended
hospice care.  Ed had most of his family with him in his final hours.
Because of hospice, he had minimal discomfort during the last week but
was very weak.

Ed retired from UAL in October 1999 after 39+ years of service.  He
started in Baltimore, moved to Cleveland, then Kennedy in NYC, before
moving to LAX.  He retired as the Administrative Manager at LAXFO.
